Welcome to Blue Moon
Fabric Arts! |
My name is Martha Brown.
I live in Pickering, Ontario, Canada with my husband Kevin
and our two dogs, Zena and Zoey.
On this website you will see several of my Fibre
Art creations from 2001 to the present day.
I received a degree in Art from East
Tennessee State University in 1977 with a focus on figure drawing, but it
wasn't until 1994 that I found an interest in Fibre Art.
This part of the journey started when
I was trying to refurbish an old comforter and a neighbor,
upon seeing my poor attempt, loaned me a quilting book. Within two weeks I
was hooked on the technique of cutting up fabrics and sewing them back
together to create new designs.
I started out with
traditional designs often inspired by the fabrics I found. For the first
few years I quilted everything by hand. Several friends and family members
received these as gifts.
The journey soon evolved into creating my own quilt
blocks and designs. The quilt tops started piling up because the hand quilting
took so much longer than the designing and piecing. I also still felt
technically limited, so I traveled to quilt conventions all over the U.S.
to find the best teachers for more creative techniques and machine
quilting.
I eventually learned how I could transform my drawings into wall
hangings, paint my own fabrics, and apply surface embellishments.
Many of my creations became national and international award
winners in quilt and art shows. Many more have sold thru galleries, at art shows, through commissions and from my website.

The Zodiac (see the Figurative Gallery) was the culmination of years of learning and practive. Once this work was completed, I felt there was nothing left for me to say with the art form. I did a few final pieces in 2007 - pieces that had a more personal relevance to me- but the challenge was no longer there. But my love of fabric continued.
I returned to my first love of portraying the figure, but
instead of the charcoal or pastels and paper I used over 30 years ago, the
medium remained fabric, creating soft sculptures, or art dolls. Figurative Art is another term for this; using the human
body, or what may merely hint at the human figure,
to communicate something thru pose, character expression and
costume.
This art form held my interest for about 5 years,
but now it seems it's time for a new adventure once again. Stay tyned to see what happens next!
